He Never Came Back

The mist was just creeping over the distant hills when they awoke to the rustle of armor, the restless stamping of hooves. The smoke was overpowering the dawn, rising steadily from the blood-red sun as their father rode off to battle, his banners held high in the wind. The tears were too cold to fall as he left them knowing, and she felt her sister's small hand slip into hers as any words of reassurance were stolen by the wind, by the smoke and the unspoken truth.

He never came back.

This is my first picture using stock, so I'm a little nervous about posting it. It illustrates a bit of lore from my book, something no one will likely ever know of but me, but I couldn't get the image out of my head.
